Privacy on Joyland AI: what the policy actually says

Joyland AI stores your chats on servers in the United States, states no retention period, and deletes your data only when you email support and verify your identity. That is the short version of a policy I read in full, twice, because the page at joyland.ai/document/privacy is a single-page app that shows a blank screen to most scrapers and a wall of text to humans. The policy names MINDZEN PTE. LTD. as the operator and, oddly for a Singapore company, is written around the UK Data Protection Act 2018 and the GDPR, with a Data Protection Officer reachable at [email protected].

What Joyland AI collects

Joyland AI collects account details, the content of any message you send to the company, log data (IP address, browser, timestamps), device information, usage data (which characters you open, which features you use, how long you stay), cookies from analytics and advertising networks, and whatever you hand over on its social media pages. One clause deserves a highlight: “When you enter content into the Services we may monitor what you write to check that it does not contain inappropriate content or Personal Information.” That is the filter, described in legal terms, and it applies to every chat. The iOS listing adds that the app uses device ID, search history, product interaction, purchase history and diagnostics to track you across other companies’ apps, which is more tracking than the text-only nature of the product needs.

Retention, deletion and training on chats

The policy states no retention period at all, and I checked the whole document for the words retain, retention and “as long as”. What it does say is that you have “the right to request deletion of your Personal Information” by emailing [email protected], that Joyland AI “may require you to verify your credentials” first, and that if it cannot verify you it will not delete anything. There is no delete button in the account settings that wipes chats server-side; you can delete conversations from your view, but the policy governs what the company keeps. On training: the policy does not use the word “train”. It says the company may “convert the collected dialogue text data into anonymous numbers and graphs” for “non-profit academic cooperation with certified third-party academic institutions, academic conferences, journal publications and other academic activities”, and separately that aggregated information may be used “to conduct research (which may remain internal or may be shared with third parties as necessary)”. Read that as: your roleplay may end up, anonymised, in a paper. The policy also confirms the company does “not and will not sell your Personal Information”, and that data may be shared with hosting, cloud, email, advertising and analytics vendors and with any buyer in a business transfer.

Minimum age on Joyland AI

Joyland AI’s terms and privacy policy both set the minimum age at 13, or 16 for EU residents, which is a long way below the 18+ rating the App Store gives the iOS app and the adult themes the app advertises. The terms separately ban soliciting personal information from anyone under 18 and prohibit creating or depicting minor characters, including aged-up ones, but there is no age verification at sign-up. Independent reviewers report an age check before the NSFW toggle on paid plans, which I take as the practical gate. For a platform that sells itself on romance and drama, a 13-year-old floor in the legal documents is the single thing I would most like Joyland to change, and our privacy scorecard marks it down for it.

The Joyland AI credits economy, explained

Credits are Joyland AI’s single currency for everything beyond plain free-model text: images in chat, avatar generation on the web, unlocking premium gallery pictures and, on the free tier, the day’s messages. The membership page gives Free users “10 free credits daily”, Standard users 5,000 credits a month on top of unlimited text conversations, and Premium users unlimited credits. Understanding what a credit buys is the difference between a $9.99 plan feeling generous and feeling like a slot machine.

What a credit buys on Joyland AI

According to the image-generation help article, an on-demand or quick-click image in chat costs 30 credits, an AI-generated avatar on the web costs 25 credits after the ten free attempts, and you can pay 500 credits once to unlock image generation with a specific companion forever. Premium subscribers generate images with any compatible companion without spending credits at all. On Standard, 5,000 credits is therefore roughly 160 chat images a month before the separate daily cap of 20 image messages bites, which is plenty for a text-first user and thin for someone who wants a picture every scene. Text on the paid plans does not consume credits, which is the part the upgrade screen undersells. The plan page also lists “10 free custom packs monthly” on Standard and unlimited on Premium without defining the term; as far as I can tell it refers to image style packs, but Joyland does not say so anywhere I could find.

Ten credits or fifty: the free tier problem

Joyland AI’s own plan page says 10 credits a day; two independent hands-on tests from 2026 report about 50 a day and three image messages a day from a separate budget, and older articles quote 20. I saw an allowance that ran out after a couple of real scenes, which fits either figure depending on how long your messages are, and I am not going to pretend I counted. The honest reading is that the free allowance changes with the company’s mood and the recycled articles never catch up. What does not change is the design: the credit meter empties mid-scene, the upgrade card appears immediately, and the “Free Use” clause in the terms says plainly that the free tier “is aimed at users who cannot afford any of our subscription-fee based programs” and can be denied “to anyone at any time”. The five chat models make the same point: only the Free model is available without paying, while Roleplay, StoryStream, Lifelike and Vividtale are marked Pro. The difference in prose quality between the Free model and the Pro ones is real, and it is the most persuasive upgrade argument Joyland AI has. Joyland AI characters: the library and the creation tools

Joyland AI’s library is its main asset, organised into thirteen Discover categories with four sort orders and a search box, and its creation tool is the friendliest I have used in this category. The two halves of that sentence are related: because creation is easy, the library is enormous and uneven, and the review process only polices content rules, not quality.

Finding characters on Joyland AI

Discover sorts by Hot (the recommendation algorithm), New (recently approved bots), Top Chats (conversation volume) and Top Rated (likes), and each card shows the name, introduction, like count, chat count, tags and feature icons, with the greeting revealed on hover. A pink photo icon marks companions that support consistent image generation. Categories run from Anime and Romance through Furry, OC, RPG, Game Characters, BL and ABO, Movie and TV, Helpers, VTuber, Cartoon, Interactive Story and AI-Roleplay. That is a good taxonomy for browsing the top of each list and a poor one for finding anything specific: there is no filter by trait or gender, search returns a short list in a separate view, and independent reviewers estimate the catalogue in the tens of thousands, most of it thin. Public bots need to stay SFW to qualify for homepage featuring, which quietly means the best-written explicit characters are found through Unlisted links shared on Discord rather than through Joyland’s own front door.

Building a bot and giving it Lore

Creation on Joyland AI asks for name, gender and age, a short introduction, a character description of at least 100 words, a greeting, and optional scenario, facts and knowledge, and example dialogue, with an avatar uploaded (400 pixels or larger, 10 MB maximum) or generated. Paid subscribers can use animated GIF avatars. The Lore feature (also called Facts and Knowledge or Lorebook) attaches keyword-triggered entries to a character, up to 200 entries when edited as JSON, and the help article warns sensibly that long entries crowd out others. Personas, the mirror-image feature that tells the bot who you are, take a name of up to 30 characters and a description of up to 500, with three slots on Free, 20 on Standard and 50 on Premium. Every public bot passes a review that applies the terms: no minors or aged-up minors, no real or photorealistic sexual images, no hate content, and a specific list of banned fetish categories. Independent reviews mention a cap of around 40 bots per creator, which I could not confirm on an official page.

Joyland AI memory tiers in practice

Joyland AI sells memory in three tiers, and in practice the free tier remembers nothing between sessions, Standard remembers the outline, and Premium is the only plan that claims to remember across weeks or months. The memory help article puts it in exactly those words: Free users get “context-based memory that works within your current conversation”, Standard users get “a short-term memory model that remembers key details across multiple chat sessions”, and Premium users get “long-term memory capabilities” that maintain “preferences, shared stories, and relationship dynamics across weeks or months”.

What the tiers feel like on Joyland AI

On Free, the storyline I continued the next day started cold, which is what “within your current conversation” means and is fair enough for a free plan. On Standard, the character carried the shape of the story across sessions but drifted from its own backstory inside long scenes, and the drift got worse the longer the session ran. Independent testers describe the same drift more harshly, with characters inventing details and losing context after a few dozen messages even on Premium, and I have no reason to think Premium’s long-term memory changes the behaviour inside a single long scene, because that is a context-window problem rather than a storage problem. The working fix on every tier is the Memory panel in the chat: Customized Memory lets you write what the character must remember permanently, and Pin saves any message from the log. One independent review reports limits of 800 characters of custom memory and 20 pins on Standard against 1,500 and 50 on Premium; those figures are not on Joyland’s official pages, so treat them as reported rather than confirmed. Either way, memory on Joyland AI is something you maintain, not something the app does for you, and that is the honest comparison with Kindroid and Nomi, where the app does the remembering.

Joyland AI community and support

Joyland AI’s community lives on a Discord server of roughly 15,000 members and a subreddit, r/joyland_ai, while support is a single email address, [email protected], that also handles privacy requests and legal notices. The Discord invite showed about 14,900 members and around 900 online when I checked, which is mid-sized for the category and busy enough that character recommendations and Unlisted links circulate daily. The subreddit exists and is where most of the filter complaints land; I could not measure its size reliably, so I will not quote a number.

Support itself is thin. There is no live chat and no ticket system, the help centre is fourteen blog-style articles, and the terms make the boundaries clear: all fees are non-refundable, partial months and partial years are not refunded, and cancellation happens through the store or payment partner where you bought the plan, not inside Joyland. Disputes go through a 60-day email notice period and then binding arbitration at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, with class actions waived. The app-store ratings tell the rest of the story: 2.8 stars from 108 ratings on the App Store and 2.4 stars on Google Play against more than 100,000 downloads, with the recurring complaints being the filter, chat history vanishing on iOS when a new conversation starts, user-created bots failing to display, and slow search. The developers do ship updates (version 2.0.0 in August 2026 reworked the profile and product pages), and reviewers note the team is “listening somewhat”, but the ratings have fallen over the past year rather than risen, and an unfunded company with one support inbox has limited room to fix that.
