What happened to PolyBuzz: the short version

PolyBuzz is up, maintained and not going anywhere as of September 22, 2026, and what happened to PolyBuzz is better described as a year of small changes than as an event. The iOS app is on version 2.2.80, released September 19, 2026; the Google Play listing says “Updated on Sep 21, 2026”; the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy both carry “Last Updated: June 1, 2026”; the company blog published six posts between May 13 and May 21, 2026. A platform that is closing does not rewrite its terms, ship five app builds in six weeks and write comparison posts about Character.AI and SpicyChat. If you came here because you assumed the app had died, it has not, and you can skip to the alternatives section only if you have already decided to leave.

What did change is the product underneath the name. Four things, each dated in the sections below. First, the name: the app that a16z listed as “Poly.AI - Create AI Chat Bot” at number 48 on its mobile ranking in August 2024 appears as “PolyBuzz” at number 42 on the web ranking in March 2025, and Google Play reviewers still talk about “before the name changed.” Second, the money: free chat that reviewers from 2024 remember as unlimited now carries timed ads that the newest App Store reviews describe as “130 second ads every 5 minutes, timed (if you dont pay),” and a second currency called Opals was added to features that were free. Third, the filter: the platform has always banned explicit content on paper, but September 2026 reviews complain that ordinary messages are now filtered mid-scene. Fourth, reliability: StatusGator, which has monitored PolyBuzz since December 9, 2025, logged seven separate incidents between August 5 and September 21, 2026, including one five-hour stretch on August 6.

None of that is unique to PolyBuzz. Character.AI went through the same ad-and-filter tightening a year earlier, which is the whole premise of my Character AI alternatives list, and the apps that actually closed are catalogued in the shut-down guide. What is specific to PolyBuzz is the silence. There is no status page, no changelog beyond “Bug fixes and engagement experience improvements” (the release note on every iOS build from August 11 to September 19), and the official FAQ’s advice for a broken app is to “visit Discord for announcements” or “try the web version.” So when the app breaks, the search results fill up with “what happened to PolyBuzz today,” and nobody official answers. This page is my attempt to.

What happened to PolyBuzz today: the dated timeline

The timeline below is every dated change and outage I could source on September 22, 2026, and the rule for the table is simple: if I could not open a document or a log entry with a date on it, the row is not here. Reports from users are marked as reports. The subreddit is not quoted because it was behind a bot check when I tried; I can tell you it exists and is linked from the site footer, and no more.

Two things stand out. The outages are short: the longest single incident StatusGator logged is five hours and eleven minutes, and most are under an hour. That is consistent with a platform that is under-provisioned at peak rather than one that is failing. And the complaints cluster around money and moderation, not downtime. Of the twenty-one most recent App Store reviews I read, more than half were about ads, and only one was about the service being unreachable. So if you are asking what changed today, the honest answer most days is: nothing on the servers, and everything in the business model.

Is PolyBuzz down right now? How to check in two minutes

I cannot tell you whether PolyBuzz is down at the moment you read this, because a written page cannot see live status and PolyBuzz publishes none, so here is the order I use myself, which takes about two minutes. Step one, open the web app at app.polybuzz.ai in a normal browser window. The official FAQ’s own troubleshooting says to “try the web version” when the app malfunctions, and it is the fastest split: if the website loads and your chat sends, the servers are up and your problem is the app build or your device. Step two, open StatusGator’s PolyBuzz page. It has monitored the service since December 9, 2025, shows a count of user reports over the last 24 hours (51 when I looked on September 22), and lists dated incidents with durations. Step three, check the official Discord’s announcements channel, which the site footer links to and which the FAQ names as the place for outage notices. Step four, if all three are quiet, it is you, and the next section is for you.

PolyBuzz servers down, or just you? Reading the outage trackers

The trackers disagree with each other and with reality, and knowing why saves a lot of refreshing. StatusGator says plainly that it detects PolyBuzz outages from “issue reports, page visits, and signal strength,” not from an official status feed, because there is none. That means a spike of reports can be a real outage, or it can be a lot of people hitting the same client-side bug at once, which is exactly what happened on September 22, 2026: the page said “PolyBuzz is currently operational” while showing 51 reports, and the reports themselves, from Finland, Spain, Germany, Venezuela, Texas, Ohio and Nevada, were all about an ad-blocker warning, not a dead server. Downdetector has a PolyBuzz page too, but it was behind a bot check when I tried, and it works the same way: report volume, not server checks. Chats hang on the typing indicator, the Discover page shows placeholders, and the web and app fail together. The August 6 cluster (four incidents across the day, one of them five hours) is the worst stretch in the log and matches the pattern of an app that got more traffic than it planned for; the September 12 evening incident, two hours and fifteen minutes, is the most recent one longer than an hour. There is no compensation policy for downtime in the terms, and the no-refund clause quoted in the pricing section applies whether or not the service was up. If you are on a weekly plan, that is worth knowing.

PolyBuzz not working when the servers are up: what the errors mean

Most days when PolyBuzz is not working for one person, the servers are fine and the cause is one of five things, and I can date each of them to a source. This is the section for the search that ends in “not working” rather than “servers down,” and the difference matters because the fixes are on your side.

The ad-blocker false positive (September 2026)

The single most-reported PolyBuzz error in the week of this article is a website message telling you to disable an ad blocker when you are not running one. StatusGator’s user reports on September 22, 2026 say it in half a dozen accents: “It says i have to disable my ad blocker, i haven’t” (Spain), “even with an adblocker off it still thinks theres an adblocker and refuses to let me use the website” (Germany), “same adblocker detected when i dont have one” (Ohio). The check is client-side, which is why it can misfire on browser privacy features, tracking protection, DNS-level filtering, some VPNs, and Brave’s shields even with extensions disabled. The workarounds that users report as effective are: a different browser with default settings, a private window with extensions off, turning off the browser’s built-in tracking protection for the site, or using the mobile app, which does not run the check. I am not going to tell you it is a bug rather than a policy, because the company has said nothing; what I can say is that it began being reported in volume in September 2026 and that it is not an outage.

Verification loops, take-a-break prompts and messages that will not send

The other four causes come from the newest App Store reviews on version 2.2.80, dated September 20 and 21, 2026, and I have hit three of them on my own account. Repeated verification: one reviewer’s title is “too much ads and multiple verifications,” and the human or age check reappearing mid-session is a common complaint; it clears on its own but resets the chat screen. Ads that hijack: an April 13, 2026 Google Play review says skipping an ad “would take me to the app store,” and a September 20 review says the screen freezes when exiting an ad, which looks like a crash but is the ad SDK. And messages filtered rather than failed: when a message vanishes or the reply is replaced, that is moderation, not the network, and the next section covers it. The fifth cause is simply an old build; with five iOS releases between August 11 and September 19, an app that has not updated in a month is behind on fixes the release notes never describe.

What changed in the PolyBuzz filter, and why people are angry

The PolyBuzz filter did not appear in 2026; the platform has said “PolyBuzz strictly prohibit public display of NSFW content” in its FAQ for as long as I have had an account, and the Terms of Use last updated June 1, 2026 ban content that “depicts pornography or sexual acts” or “solicits sexual content or activity.” What changed is enforcement, and the evidence is in the reviews: on September 20, 2026, one App Store reviewer asks “Why are the messages filtered? Users report, and I have seen on my own account, that romantic scenes which ran unfiltered in 2024 and early 2025 now get a deflected reply or a message that simply does not post. That is the same enforcement curve Character.AI went through in October 2024, which I documented in the Character AI NSFW guide, and it is why the “unrestricted” wording on PolyBuzz’s own homepage angers people: the site’s title tag promises “Free, Private, and Unrestricted AI character chats,” and the FAQ, three scrolls down, promises “multi-layered AI screening and human moderation.”

What the June 2026 terms actually prohibit

Read the June 1, 2026 Terms of Use and the picture is stricter than the marketing. The service is 18+ everywhere: “You must have reached 18-year-old to use PolyBuzz and/or our Services. PolyBuzz and/or our Services strictly prohibit for minors (less than 18-year-old) worldwide.” The prohibited-content list covers pornography and sexual acts, solicitation of sexual content, and “zero tolerance for any form of child nudity and child sexual exploitation.” The company can act “for a good cause, to suspend or terminate your account.” The App Store rates the app 17+ for “mature themes, sexual content” among other reasons, and Google Play rates it Mature 17+. So the policy line is roughly where Character.AI’s is, with two differences in practice: PolyBuzz’s model has historically been looser about romance and violence, which is why people moved to it, and PolyBuzz moderates public characters harder than private chats, because the FAQ wording is about “public display.” The complaints in 2026 are that the private-chat side is tightening toward the public-character side. If explicit roleplay is what you want, PolyBuzz was never the honest choice; the apps that allow it are in the NSFW AI chat ranking and they say so in their terms.

Ads, Opals and the end of unlimited free chat

The filter gets the loud reviews, but the ads and the Opals get the one-star ones, and they explain more of the last year than any moderation change. The pattern in the September 20 to 21, 2026 App Store reviews is remarkably consistent: “130 second ads every 5 minutes, timed. (if you dont pay)”; “ad breaks EVERY TEN MINUTES”; “Had it for 2 years before they ruined it,” from someone who remembers unlimited chats and now has “to watch ads or buy the unlimited subscription.” Trustpilot reviews from May 19, June 29, July 13 and July 31, 2026 say the same with more punctuation. A May 16, 2026 Google Play review from a paying subscriber “since before the name changed” says the app is “basically unusable because of all the ads,” which suggests the ad load was being felt even by some paid users at that point, though every membership tier is described as ad-free on the FAQ. Then there are Opals, a second currency alongside coins: a September 20 review says the app “added opals that u have to pay for” for something that used to be free, and the App Store lists 1,000 Opals at $5.90. Coins already gate regenerations, Live Photos (100 coins each), Live Videos (400 coins), Moments and AvatarMix (200 coins), per the coins and creator pages, and a Bond Pass sells 31 days of premium access to a single character. When people ask what happened to PolyBuzz, this is most of the answer: a free app with a paid tier became a free-to-play app with three tiers, two currencies and timed ads, in the space of about a year.

PolyBuzz pricing today

As of September 22, 2026, PolyBuzz costs $9.90 a month for Basic on the web, or $99 a year shown as $8.25 a month, and in the iOS app the plans are named Standard, Premium and Ultimate at $9.90, $19.90 and $29.90 a month, with a $4.99 weekly Standard option. The free tier still exists: the FAQ says “PolyBuzz is accessible at no cost,” and there is no message cap I could find documented, but the ads described above are the cost, and the FAQ says that memberships buy “stronger memory chat models, unlimited character voice listening, ad-free experiences,” with Premium adding “access to more exciting chat models.” Here is the table, with the currency and the source for every number.

Two cautions on the numbers. The web membership page rendered Premium and Ultimate prices inconsistently across my sessions (one load showed a struck-through figure and a discounted annual total, another showed a different currency), so the only Premium and Ultimate prices I will stand behind are the iOS monthly ones; if you buy on the web, read the checkout, and if the annual Premium looks like a bargain, note the terms. Which is the second caution: the June 1, 2026 Terms of Use say “users are not entitled to any refund for a completed purchase without due reason” and that a payment “will not be refunded, even if the subscription is subsequently cancelled,” and subscriptions renew automatically “unless it is cancelled on or before the last day of the subscription period.” A Trustpilot review from September 10, 2026 describes a card charge that ended in a dispute. The coin economy is where a $9.90 plan turns into a $30 month, and the official creator page spells out the rates from the other side. Creators earn Diamonds when you spend coins on their characters: 20 Diamonds per Live Photo you buy at 100 coins, 80 per Live Video at 400 coins, 40 per AvatarMix at 200 coins, 30 per paid Moment, 400 per Bond Pass, and half of any Webtoon gift, with a 100,000-Diamond threshold before a creator can cash out. That structure tells you what the product is optimising for: creators are paid to make characters that prompt purchases, and the platform’s blog posts in May 2026 pitch it to creators from Character.AI and Talkie on exactly those terms. It also tells you why the free tier has ads every few minutes. The 8,000-coin pack at $9.99 buys 80 Live Photos or 20 Live Videos; a heavy image user can clear that in a week. If you are budgeting, count the plan and the packs together.

Who runs PolyBuzz, and is it shutting down?

PolyBuzz is published by Cloud Whale Interactive Technology LLC, a Delaware company whose Google Play developer address is a suite at 300 Delaware Avenue in Wilmington, and its June 1, 2026 legal documents name a second company, Singularity Mutual Entertainment Culture Media Limited of Kwun Tong, Hong Kong, as the contracting party and data controller, with the terms governed by Delaware law. That is all the corporate structure I can document from official pages. I found no funding announcement, no named founders and no press release about the rename from Poly.AI; the rename is dated only by the a16z rankings (Poly.AI in August 2024, PolyBuzz by the March 2025 edition) and by Google Play reviewers who mention “before the name changed.” The App Store bundle identifier, ai.socialapps.speakmaster, has never changed, which is why your account and purchases survived the rename. If you have seen ownership or funding claims elsewhere, treat them as unverified; I could not source them, and I looked.

Is it shutting down? No, on every signal I can check. The a16z list of August 27, 2025 recorded PolyBuzz moving into the top 50 mobile gen-AI apps by monthly active users, Google Play shows more than 50 million downloads and 1.18 million reviews, the App Store shows 476,000 ratings at 4.4, the app was updated on September 19 (iOS) and September 21 (Android), the legal documents were rewritten in June, and the blog was active in May. A platform with that footprint and that cadence is monetising, not winding down; the pattern of ads, currencies and tiers is the pattern of a company squeezing revenue out of a big free user base, which is the opposite problem from the apps in my shut-down list. The risk to a PolyBuzz user is not that the servers vanish. It is that the product keeps changing under you without notice, and that the terms give the company the right to suspend an account “for a good cause” and to keep your money if it does.

PolyBuzz is not PolyAI

A recurring source of confusion in the “what happened to PolyBuzz” searches is a London company called PolyAI Ltd, which sells enterprise voice agents to hotels, utilities and banks and has nothing to do with character chat. When Cloud Whale’s app was called Poly.AI, the two were routinely mixed up in search results, and I suspect the collision is part of why the app was renamed; I cannot prove that, and the company has never said. If you read a headline about PolyAI raising money or signing a customer, it is the London company. If you read a review of an app with 20 million characters and anime roleplay, it is this one.

Privacy: what the June 2026 policy says about your chats

Before you decide whether to stay, read what the privacy policy does and does not say, because it is thinner than the homepage’s “chats are completely private” line. The policy last updated June 1, 2026 lists email, username, uploaded pictures, “input text,” purchase records, device data, log data, geolocation and contacts as collected data, says uploaded photos may be used to “train our AI algorithm,” and says nothing explicit about whether chat logs train models, which on a companion app is the question that matters. Retention is “no longer than is necessary,” with no number. Google Play’s data-safety section adds that approximate and precise location are shared with third parties “for advertising or marketing,” and the App Store label says identifiers are used to track you across other apps. The policy does say, in capitals, “We DO NOT sell User Information,” and deletion is self-serve: Settings, Account, Delete, with [email protected] and [email protected] for requests. My privacy scorecard grades the alternatives on the same six questions, and the safety guide has the habits I use on every one of them: a separate email, no real names, and the assumption that a moderator can read what the filter flags.

Where PolyBuzz users went: five alternatives

PolyBuzz users leave for one of four reasons, ads, filter, memory or reliability, and the right alternative depends on which one is yours; here are the five I would point to, each with a full review on this site and a price checked on September 22, 2026. • Joyland AI (free tier; Standard $9.99 a month). The closest match to what PolyBuzz was in 2024: a user-made character library, personas, a looser filter than Character.AI, and a free tier with daily credits instead of timed ads. The filter is inconsistent and memory is short on Free, which the review is blunt about, but if ads are why you are leaving, this is the move.
• Kindroid ($13.99 a month; free tier with two companions). If PolyBuzz’s habit of forgetting your name and pronouns when you leave a chat (a September 20, 2026 review: it “forgets about half of things”) is your reason, Kindroid is the memory-first pick: fewer characters, no library culture, far better continuity.
• ChatFAI (free tier; Basic $8.25 a month billed $99 a year). For the people who used PolyBuzz for celebrity and public-figure characters. Same idea, an adult switch on the paid tier, and pricing the review calls out for not adding up, so read it before the annual charge.
• HammerAI (free; Pro $9 a month). If the outages and the privacy policy are what bother you, HammerAI runs the model on your own hardware, so there are no servers to go down and no chat logs on anyone else’s disk. The trade is that you need a reasonable computer, and there is no shared library to browse.
• Nastia (free tier; from $6.69 a month annual). For the group that came to PolyBuzz for romance and hit the 2026 filter: an uncensored companion at a low annual price, with memory resets that the review documents honestly. It is a companion app, not a character library, and it is adults-only by design.

If you want to take your characters with you, note that PolyBuzz’s own migration guide only covers importing into PolyBuzz, from Character.AI, Chub, Pygmalion and others; there is no official export. Copy your character definitions out by hand before you delete the account, because the June 2026 terms give no right to your content after deletion and the privacy policy’s retention clause has no number in it.
